An Otago Peninsula farm owned by the same family for nearly 120 years is for sale.

Bayside Farm owner Mary Hellyer said she had ''mixed feelings'' about selling the 47ha Macandrew Bay sheep farm.

''I'm not thrilled about leaving but I know I have to move on with my life and it has got too big for me because it's only me,'' she said.

She moved to the farm and its 1903 homestead with husband Colin Hellyer, known as Snow, in 1982, following the death of his father, Donald.

Snow, at the time, was a Heriot stock agent.

The income the farm generated was not enough to live on and both she and Snow had other jobs, Mrs Hellyer said.

After Snow died in 2006, Mrs Hellyer ran the farm for a year, but then decided to lease the paddocks to a neighbouring farmer.

She continued to live in the homestead. The couple's two adult sons lived outside Otago.

Snow's uncle, Harrison Hellyer (86), said he grew up and worked on the farm,

helped milk the 25 cows and delivered milk to Macandrew Bay residents.`We hand-milked for a while and delivered around the bay and the odd lot of cream to town.''

Bayside had the longest family ownership history in Macandrew Bay and its sale ''hit hard''.

''But I knew it had to come.''

Harrison's grandfather, Samuel Hellyer, and father, John, emigrated from Jersey with three cows and settled in Dunedin.

On Bayside, Harrison's parents John and Doris Hellyer had three sons: Donald, Barry and himself.

When his father retired, Donald and wife Beverly ran the farm.

Tenders for the farm close next Wednesday.

''There's a lot of interest,'' Mrs Hellyer said.

Snow used to call Bayside his ''psychiatrist''.

''He would come home and relax and get peace of mind by just having his farm, his sheep and cattle, but I have to move on because it's too much for me.''
