Pedestrian struck by car in critical condition

A woman was in Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition last night after she was struck by a car while crossing a South Dunedin street.

Witnesses at the scene of the crash in Surrey St, near Macandrew Rd, said the Dunedin woman, who was in her early 20s, ran out on to the road and was hit by the car just after 3pm.

A nearby resident said the woman was unconscious after the collision and "did not look in a good way".

Other residents said the injured woman lived in the street.

A witness said the car was travelling "quite fast", but it was hard to tell if it was doing more than 50kmh.

Acting Senior Sergeant Jason Guthrie said police were investigating the circumstances of the crash.
