Pedestrian still in critical condition

A woman pedestrian in her 20s, who was hit by a car while crossing Surrey St in St Clair on Wednesday, remained in a critical condition in Dunedin Hospital last night.

Police inquiries are continuing into how the 3pm accident happened.

Senior Sergeant Mel Aitken asked anyone who witnessed the incident to call police.

St John has defended the time it took for an ambulance to reach the scene.

A resident of the street contacted the Otago Daily Times yesterday to voice concern at the length of time it took the ambulance to arrive. A St John spokeswoman said a Mosgiel ambulance was sent immediately the call was received at 3.05pm, as the city ambulances were all transporting patients, on what was a particularly busy day.

The Hillside Rd, South Dunedin ambulance, which was dropping a patient at Dunedin Hospital when the call came in, was dispatched, leaving the hospital as soon as it had delivered the patient.

The two ambulances arrived at Surrey St at 3.17pm and 3.18pm respectively.

"When these things happen, it seems like a really long time while you are waiting for an ambulance, but the reality is that both ambulances arrived pretty quickly," the spokeswoman said.
