You would think Fred Dagg, a couple of sheep and a 2m-tall jar of Marmite lying in your garden would make an absolute mess of your precious flower plots.
But it seems to work in the gardens at Anzac Square in front of the Dunedin Railway Station.
Delta gardening team leader Rebecca Bloxham has designed and planted the gardens, which will soon bloom into images with a kiwiana theme.
As well as Fred, the sheep and the Marmite jar, Miss Bloxham has filled other plots in gardens to create images of a Buzzy Bee toy, a tiki, some koru, a silver fern, a pair of jandals and the words kia ora.
At this stage, it is not obvious what all the designs are, but Miss Bloxham (24) said the plots would bloom into prominence within the next two weeks.
The gardens were ideal for the designs because they were alongside one of the most photographed buildings/tourist attractions in New Zealand, she said.
More than 6000 parsley plants were used to create the backdrop for the floral depictions.
"It's all perfectly edible, but we don't recommend people take it, because it will spoil the pictures."
Dunedin residents and tourists are encouraged to make the most of the display.
It will be pulled up in March to make way for a one to celebrate the Rugby World Cup.
