Parkinson's Society Otago co-ordinator Nancy Bamford said about two-thirds of the 50 people at the music and voice seminar at St Francis Xavier Parish Centre in Mornington had Parkinson's.
Ms Jonathan (42), of Port Chalmers, sang gospel music, while the rest of the group sang a three-part backing harmony.
People with Parkinson's often spoke softly and quickly and were difficult to understand, so singing helped rediscover the power and flexibility of their voices, Ms Jonathan said.
Before the singing, clinical neuropsychologist Dr Glenda Wallace played the group gospel music she had recorded on a holiday in New Orleans.
