Dunedin city councillors are to meet today to discuss possible changes to the inner-city parking regime after a "slightly tetchy" meeting with business representatives last night.

Ten business representatives met deputy mayor Syd Brown and Crs John Bezett and Andrew Noone, as part of a follow-up to a meeting at the Leviathan Hotel earlier this month when the council was criticised over its parking changes.

Leviathan Hotel owner Peter Laing said the meeting, held at the council chambers and at its invitation, was "slightly tetchy" but business representatives had been given an undertaking the council would discuss possible changes today.

Otago Chamber of Commerce chief executive John Christie said parking was an emotive issue for retailers "given how much they have invested in their businesses".

"There was hearty dialogue at the meeting - some healthy debate."

Cr Bezett confirmed council staff would meet today to discuss some of the issues raised and "to get the best outcome for the city".

Minor parking changes could be finalised as early as tomorrow and amended within a month, he said.

"The other issues, which involve policy changes . . . that will take longer.

"We accept there have been some mistakes made, but council does not do these things to annoy people."
