Charlotte and Charlie are among the most popular names chosen for babies in Otago last year.
Charlotte was the most popular (eight examples) according to the 468 birth notices for babies published in the Otago Daily Times.
Seven babies were named Charlie, and at least two of the Charlottes are also likely to be referred to as Charlie.
The girl specifically named Charlie is Charlie Jayde Arthur, born at Queen Mary Maternity Centre at Dunedin Hospital on September 16 and weighing 2.43kg (5lb 6oz).
Her parents, Paul Arthur (27) and Jessica Horne (28), of Dunedin, named her Charlie because of Miss Horne's closeness to her grandfather, Jim Horne.
Miss Horne said the father of her grandfather was named Charlie. There was another family link as well because the father of her grandmother, Barbara Horne (nee Davie) was named Arthur - the surname of her partner and Charlie.
She never considered naming her daughter Charlotte and then calling her Charlie.
''No, it has always been Charlie.''
The couple chose the middle name Jayde because it started with J, so if Charlie never warmed to her name, or wanted a shorter name, she had the option of being known as CJ.
If they had a boy, he probably would have been named Jackson or Jacob, but not Charlie.
Charlie was Miss Horne's first child and Mr Arthur's second.
Of all birth notices published in the ODT last year, 241 were for boys and 227 for girls.
The most popular girl's first name in 2013 was Lucy (8). In 2012 Charlotte (11) topped the list again.
The most popular boy's first name in 2013 was Oliver (9) and in 2012 it was Jack (11).
In 2013, eight babies were named Charlie, Charley or Charlee, four of them girls.
More unusual names last year included Bear, Cruz and Lenix for boys and Skylah, Jewels and Lishka for girls.
Oakley for a boy made the list for the second consecutive year.
Names for babies starting with M were the most popular overall (47), followed by those starting with A (46), L (43) or C (43).
No first names started with U or Y, as was the case in 2013 and 2012.
