Panthers brought in for emergency aid

In the event of disaster at Dunedin Airport, Gordy will be on hand to help save the day.

"Gordy" is one of two new fire appliances bought by the Dunedin Airport Emergency Service, with the second appliance expected to be named by the end of the week.

Firefighter Steve McGarry said the new appliances, Rosenbauer Panthers, have come from Austria and can hold 7000 litres of water, 1200 litres of foam, and 250kg of dry powder.

"That’s the firefighting medium we need to fight fires," he said.

The new trucks would be used in the case of aircraft crashes, fires and emergencies.

Mr McGarry said the Rosenbauer Panthers were capable of pumping out 7000 litres of water in 60 seconds.

"These appliances are brand new and worth about $1.2 million to $1.3m each — They’re pretty powerful," he said.

The new trucks can go from 0kmh to 80kmh in about 23 seconds and had a top speed of 115kmh.

Crew chief Bruce Smaill said the new appliances were state-of-the-art.

"Everything is push button and automatic," he said.

It was the first time the airport crew had bought new appliances.

"All the other trucks we have gotten have been second hand," Mr Smaill said.
