Dunedin school pupils will get a visual lesson on the importance of air when the Asthma Foundation hot air balloon visits them today.

Denis Hall and Peter Atkins will take Puff, the balloon, to Balmacewen Intermediate and Dunedin North Intermediate to raise awareness about respiratory illness.

The pair have toured with the balloon during the past four years, spreading the message about healthy lungs in a fun way.

"It's a good way to get that message across because schools are really happy for it to come along, and teachers can use it for different lessons like art, physics and history," Mr Hall said.

The visits coincide with World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Awareness Day, which the Asthma Foundation is using to encourage people over 35 who smoke, or previously smoked, to have their lungs tested.

Asthma Foundation chief executive Jane Patterson advised people to ask for a spirometry test when they were next at the doctor.

"If your lungs are damaged and showing the effects of smoking, this will give you an incentive to quit or make some other lifestyle choices," she said.

COPD is an umbrella term which covers emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

According to the World Health Organisation, it is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide with nearly 3 million people dying from it each year.

Mr Hall and Mr Atkins will take the balloon to Alexandra tomorrow.
