Pair of feigned call-outs for Armed Offenders Squad

A fight which led to an armed offenders squad (AOS) call-out in Port Chalmers on Sunday afternoon resulted in two family members being arrested, Dunedin police say.

Officers attending an incident in Port Chalmers Rd, about 5pm, reported a 32-year-old man and his 17-year old nephew were "fighting over a female", Senior Sergeant Mel Aitken, of Dunedin, said.

The older man was arrested and charged with assault.

"During the incident, the nephew made an allegation to police that the uncle had a firearm, and he had been threatened with that weapon so the AOS was called," Snr Sgt Aitken said.

The younger man was charged with making a false complaint to police.

Police did not recover any weapons or firearms from the nearby address where the incident began.

AOS members returning from Port Chalmers were called to assist ambulance staff with an incident in Castle St, Dunedin, during which a male claimed he had been stabbed.

Police could not substantiate those claims.
