OUSA services satisfy; funding unsure

The University of Otago is happy with the quality of services provided by the Otago University Students' Association (OUSA), but has not committed to any funding for the association beyond this year.

This comes after the university signed a "service-level agreement" to fund OUSA this year, filling the gap left by the removal of mandatory student levies after the passing of the VSM Bill at the end of last year.

OUSA president Logan Edgar last month said the amount it received from the university was similar to what it received from students last year.

Among the services the university funds through the agreement are events organised by OUSA, student support services and student media.

A university spokeswoman said it was happy with the quality of services provided by OUSA.

However, it had "given no firm commitment to retain or fund services" beyond this year.

"A decision on this will be made after consultation with OUSA ... and in the context of the university's 2013 budget," she said.

The agreement included monthly service and performance reporting and a number of "in-depth reviews of particular services" during the year.

OUSA spokesman Alasdair Johnston said the association was pleased with its relationship with the university.

He was confident OUSA would be able to maintain a similar level of services in next year's agreement, but accepted there could be some change.

"We do realise that things do evolve and change and with the review process ... we may need to [change our] focus ... and that's really driven by students [and] what gets used and what doesn't get used," Mr Johnston said.

OUSA was also "pretty happy" with the level of scrutiny it was put under as part of the agreement.

"We already had reporting systems so it was just about tweaking them and making them a bit more university friendly."

The university declined to provide the Otago Daily Times with a copy of the service-level agreement on the grounds it would disadvantage its commercial activities.
