OUSA levies may rise

Students attending the University of Otago could be paying about 6.5% more to belong to their student association next year.

The University of Otago Students Association (OUSA) executive has recommended an increase in levies for the bulk of its members - students studying full time at the Dunedin campus.

Their levies could increase from $178.75 this year to almost $191 next year, including GST.

About $3.50 of the increase is because GST is rising to 15%.

Part-time students, distance learners and those studying at campuses outside Dunedin pay a proportion of the levies.

It is compulsory for students to belong to student associations.

OUSA levies are used to pay for many services including representation and advocacy, budget advice, welfare, recreation facilities and events.

They also subsidise media outlets Critic magazine and Radio 1.

This year's levies for full-time students are split almost evenly between a general levy and a building levy.

At its meeting on Tuesday, the executive decided to increase the general levy to $138 and reduce the building levy to $52, OUSA president Harriet Geoghegan said yesterday.

A forum to discuss the proposal will be held early next month and students will be invited to vote on it online the following week.

In July, OUSA decided to do away with student general meetings, moving instead to distributing information and voting forms online.

Next month's vote would be the first test of the new system, Ms Geoghegan said.
