Forget the rugby, Otago rules the courts.

The Nuggets sit at the top of the National Basketball League after making a perfect seven-from-seven start to the 2013 campaign.

And our netballers are pretty useful as well. Otago is the current national and national under-21 champion and, with a little help from the good folk in Southland, the Steel is travelling along nicely with four wins from its last four games and a place in the top four of the ANZ Championship.

Between the Nuggets and the Steel, the teams have won their last 11 matches.

Nuggets fans are having a golden season, with just under 2000 people fronting for the Nuggets' 110-93 win against the Taranaki Mountain Airs on Saturday night and more than 2000 showing up for the 95-66 win against the Southland Sharks yesterday afternoon.

It was a record crowd for a Nuggets game at the Edgar Centre. The Highlanders have played 11 games in the Super 15 rugby competition, but things have not exactly gone to plan. The team was thumped 35-18 by the Bulls in Pretoria at the weekend, its 10th loss of the season.
