Otago is well placed for the end of analogue television in two months.
More than nine out of 10 Otago homes were already prepared for the change to digital television on April 28, Going Digital national manager Greg Harford said in Dunedin yesterday.
''About 91% homes in Otago have now converted to digital TV. That's ahead of Hawkes Bay two months out from the changeover.''
Going digital did not need to be an expensive exercise, Mr Harford said.
''Any TV can go digital with the right equipment and, in most instances, that's just a top box. In most cases, it's just a case of plugging the box into the TV and aerial.
''Most people in Dunedin will have a choice of UHF or a satellite dish. We recommend people try them on their roof before they go out and buy, as the type of box you need depends on where you live. The aerial that looks like a fish skeleton will suit most of Dunedin.''
Both the UHF and satellite options featured ''more than 13'' channels, Mr Harford said.
''There are more channels, with better pictures and features like on-screen programme guides. But, they have a different mix of channels, so it is a good idea to shop around for the best deal. It can be done for under $100 in most cases, depending on what equipment you need and the service you want.''
Reminders about the switch-over would be broadcast during April, he said.
''My message to people would be to go digital as early as they can. People who wait till the last minute may find there are waiting lists for installation.
''Then, at 2am, or thereabouts, on April 28 the screen will just turn to static.''
