Otago Rockquest finalists battle for spot at nationals

Taieri College band Ticketz belts out the first of two original songs during its slot in the Smokefreerockquest Otago Regional Final.

Ticketz was one of five bands with Taieri College connections in the 12-band final, which was contested last night at the Mayfair Theatre in South Dunedin.

Rockquest, which has launched artists such as Bic Runga, Aaron Tokona, Alien Weaponry and Evermore, has been a nationwide event since 1990.

A packed house saw the Dunedin bands battle it out to reach the national final, aiming to become the first Otago winner of the schools competition since Logan Park High School band Carriage H in 2001.

The top three bands were: Velvet Strings (Taieri College, Logan Park High School), Fool of Stars (Taieri College, Queen’s High School, home schooled) and Bliss Point (Logan Park High School).

Other awards: Solo/duo 1: Kareena Rose (South Otago High School), solo/duo 2: Kiera Wallace (Taieri College); Smokefree Tangata Beats Award: something altrc (Taieri College); people’s choice: Neils Beach (John McGlashan, Otago Boys’ High School); best vocals: Kahu McLean, Melo Keys (King’s High School); musicianship: Lochie Ing-Aram (Disciples of Dunedin, John McGlashan), Sophia Warnken, Colbie Hill and Carter Hoffman (Tectonic Sounds, Taieri College); ZM best song: something altrc (Taieri College); APRA lyric writers’ award: Spontaneous Combustion (Taieri College).
