Police cordoned off part of the Dunedin suburb of Tainui on Saturday after the discovery of what turned out to be a ceramic ornamental grenade.

The grenade was found on Saturday afternoon in Cavell St while the homeowner was doing renovations.

Police responded and sealed off the area while they sent photos of the object to specialists to confirm whether it was real.

About 45 minutes later, after receiving confirmation it was ornamental, police lifted the cordon.

''We appreciate co operation [by] the locals,'' Acting Senior Sergeant Ian Temple said.
