ORC costs $4m extra

An extra $4 million in costs has been added to the Otago Regional Council's draft Regional Land Transport Programme for 2012-15.

Members of the council's regional transport committee will meet tomorrow to decide whether to adopt the draft plan for public consultation.

Additional costs are highlighted in a report to the committee, prepared by transport senior policy analyst Suzanne Watt and transport manager Jane Turnbull, which recommends the draft be adopted for public consultation.

The report states four changes have been made to the programme since the committee last viewed and approved it.

Those changes, including the addition of $4.4 million in costs during the 2013-14 financial year to complete a State Highway 88 walkway and cycleway, have not been endorsed by the committee.

The SH88 work has been added to the programme at the request of the New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA).

The cost of the draft programme is now $460 million, up from $456 million, but of the total cost, $425 million qualifies for government subsidy - $4 million more than previously.

It is estimated the NZTA's share will total almost $302 million.

If adopted, the draft will be made public on March 31 and be open for submissions until May 4.

Hearings are tentatively planned for the week starting May 14. When and where hearings are held, and for how long, will be determined in light of submissions received.
