Otago Regional Council's search for land for a new depot on the Taieri Plain has come to an end, with plans to develop a site in the Otago Business Park development on Dukes Rd.
The council had been searching for a new site for the operational depot for the past few years as its facilities in Riccarton Rd were prone to flooding and required a high level of maintenance, corporate services director Wayne Scott said.
The 2300sq m site on Dukes Rd, which was designated industrial, was purchased subject to a short due diligence period, he said.
It was planned to build a 500sq m facility to house a workshop, indoor parking, specialised bunded stores, storage and work spaces for operational staff.
"It'll not be flash by any means; it'll be functional," Mr Scott said at a council meeting last week.
The council planned to demolish the Riccarton Rd facility, clear the site and possibly transfer the debris to the lower Taieri flood-protection scheme.
It was hoped work might begin on the depot in December, subject to title and contractor availability, he said.
Chief executive Graeme Martin said the purchase had been dealt with solely by Mr Scott and the subdivider and Colliers had not been involved in any way.
ORC chairman Stephen Cairns, who is Colliers' manager, declared a conflict of interest and left the council chambers for the discussion.
