Centre and pastoral co-ordinator Sarah Strang said customers were often waiting at the door when the shops opened.
``With the Salvation Army closing down the road [in King Edward St] there are a few more people looking around for bargains. We've definitely seen an increase in goods donated as well.''
Proceeds from the two shops were used to support the organisation's drop-in food bank, run from the George St shop, supporting local families in need and a budget advice service, she said.
The shops were manned by volunteers during the day.
Long-time volunteer Br Graeme Donaldson said he did it for something to do and to help the community.
``The main thing is to be available for the people. A lot of people just drop in to have a chat and be social. That's all part of it and it's encouraged,'' he said.
