A brand-new fur coat has been donated to the Otago Hospice op-shop, Butterflies, after the theft of a fur coat from the premises last week.
Shop volunteer Gerry Elliman said the stolen coat, worth $500, had not been recovered, but its theft had prompted messages of support and generosity from the community.
A Dunedin woman had offered the shop her fur coat, which had been received as a wedding present about 50 years ago and had not been worn.
It was worth about 500 at the time of purchase, Mr Elliman said.
He hoped the woman alleged to have stolen the shop's coat would be identified and brought to justice.
Her image was captured on CCTV footage and made public in the hope someone would recognise her and pass her name on to police.
Mr Elliman said the alleged culprit had previously shopped at Butterflies, but volunteers did not know her name.
"She's definitely around the area.
"I've seen her before quite a few times," he said.
Fur coats at the shop were kept chained after the theft.
The stolen coat was donated, along with several others, last year.
