Oliver Holmes may not have been the first New Zealand baby to struggle into the world this year, but with 2017 just one hour and 18 minutes old, he was definitely an early arrival.

Oliver, the first child of Hannah Newall and Anthony Holmes, was the first baby born this year at the Queen Mary Maternity Centre in Dunedin Hospital.

He arrived at 1.18am yesterday.

After what Ms Newall described as "an extremely hard and difficult" birth, New Year’s Day felt no different from any other day, she said.

"But it’s worth it," Mr Holmes said, cradling his son in his arms.

Oliver had been  due on January 4.

Ms Newall, of Momona, was holding off on any thoughts of more children.

"Not at this stage, after that," she said.

Ella Whitehead was reported to be the first New Zealand baby born this year, arriving at 12.01am at Taranaki Base Hospital to parents Sarah and Lewis Whitehead.
