The rugby match between the Otago Boys’ High School old boys and the King’s High School old boys at Dunedin’s North Ground tomorrow is likely to put a lot of strain on "no-longer-athletic" bodies.
Event co-ordinator Matthew Tofia said it meant the game would probably be based on a "slowly but surely, wins the battle" plan.
The teams would be made up of the schools’ alumni, including former All Blacks Kupu Vanisi and Paul Miller, former Highlander and Tongan international Uili Kolo’ofai, former Highlander and Samoan international Pelu Taele-Pavihi, as well as former school staff, all aged in their 40s and 50s.
King’s High School alumnus and former James Hargest High School principal Paul O’Connor will coach the King’s old boys and Otago Boys’ High School alumnus and former teacher Neill Baker will coach the Otago Boys’ team.
"These coaches led their schools to the respective top fours back in the day," Mr Tofia said.
Otago premier referee Joel Hibbs will be in charge.
"Without a doubt, the game is going to put a lot of strain on the players’ bodies," Mr Tofia said.
"We’re still unsure what sort of pressure we’re going to put on the ACC system.
"There’ll be an ambulance on hand."
He said when the idea was first floated, most people thought it was terrible.
"But we’re going ahead with it anyway."
The schools were looking at making it an ongoing event which could be a fundraiser for the schools or other causes.
"But to start with, we’re just doing it for the hell of it."
The game kicks off at 1pm.
