Police have confirmed they are reviewing safety procedures after an aggravated assault on a police officer on Thursday at the Dunedin Central Police Station.
The Otago Daily Times understands a male police officer was fingerprinting a man who had earlier been arrested for allegedly shoplifting, when the officer was assaulted at 4pm.
Pepper spray was used on the man.
The officer was taken to Dunedin Hospital with a suspected broken jaw.
He was later released.
Inspector Alastair Dickie said the circumstances of the incident were being reviewed, as were safety procedures.
The officer, who suffered severe bruising, was doing well, he said.
As the matter was before the court it was not appropriate to provide further details of the incident, he said.
A 22-year-old Gore shearer appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday on an aggravated assault charge.
He was remanded in custody until Tuesday.
