The gates barring traffic from John Wilson Ocean Dr in Dunedin were torn down and the road briefly reopened yesterday by an unknown offender.

At the site yesterday afternoon, the hinges appeared to have been damaged and removed from a post on the golf course side of the road, and the locked gates had been dragged to the side of the road.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said a police patrol noticed the gates had been removed about 3pm.

"I could only speculate why someone would do that," he said.

Police called the Dunedin City Council and notified drivers on the road it was about to be closed.

Staff from Delta Utility Services arrived shortly after to put the fence back in place.

Snr Sgt Benn said he did not know how long the gate had been down.
