NZ Post tight-lipped on posties

Only a handful of posties are expected to lose their jobs in Dunedin when deliveries are slashed, but New Zealand Post is being tight-lipped about the matter.

A worker who declined to be named said five people on temporary contracts were likely to be out of work.

''Management will say that there are no redundancies but in effect there are, as these people, maybe more, will lose work for sure,'' the worker said.

"While it's good that there are no permanent staff losses, there's still loss of work.''

Affected workers would be offered on-call or casual work, he said.

Mail delivery will be cut from six to three days a week in urban centres from July.

New Zealand Post Otago area manager Murray Rei said New Zealand Post was in talks with the posties.

''The final number of jobs at the branch will be known at the end of this process in June.''

Forty-five permanent posties worked in Dunedin in full-time and part-time roles, and five worked in temporary roles.

''We know it is a stressful time for staff and we are working hard to support them through these changes,'' Mr Rei said.

The worker said morale was low and work conditions were ''deteriorating''.

''I hope you can say something in the ODT for us for there will certainly be a loss of service ... quality to Dunedin residents,'' the worker said.
