The third-year University of Otago student took to a surface flood "lake'' outside his Dundas St flat, being drenched by a number of passing cars.
Mr MacLauchlan said he was simply "keeping it cheap in Dunners''.
"Surely this is a good enough reason not to go to class,'' he said, pointing at the growing puddle around him.
Following toots and a few bemused looks from passers-by, Mr MacLauchlan planned to head back to bed.
A conventional shower was not necessary, he said.
