No minimum flows in briefing

Contentious minimum flow recommendations for the Manuherikia River will not be included in a briefing for Otago regional councillors next month.

It was not clear yesterday when councillors would see minimum flow recommendations.

Otago Regional Council policy and science general manager Anita Dawe could not say either exactly when councillors would see the long-awaited report from the Manuherikia’s technical advisory group (Tag).

The council was still receiving feedback from Tag members she said yesterday and the report councillors were to receive next month remained "evolving at this point".

She did assure councillors at yesterday’s council meeting they would see the work ahead of the August public briefing, so that — as Cr Michael Laws put it — they could ask reasonable and rational questions.

Ms Dawe said there were no recommendations concerning the council’s land and water plan expected at next month’s meeting.

Chief executive Richard Saunders said next month’s briefing would include a "full explanation" of the work done by the Tag as well as where there was consensus within the group and how council staff would use that work.

However, that work was separate from the staff report that would contain recommendations for what should be included in the land and water plan, Mr Saunders said.

"That workshop is only on the Tag outputs, not on the whole picture that will create that [freshwater management unit] chapter within the plan."
