One of the newest officers on the beat in Dunedin admits he never planned a career in the police force - but says he is pleased he took the opportunity to join up.

Constable Scott Turner (24), who joined the Dunedin police in February along with two others from his class at Police College, said he was "loving it".

"There's nothing like being out there and dealing with people face to face."

The former Kaikorai Valley College pupil said he got a lot of satisfaction helping people who were upset or struggling.

The New Zealand Police are in the middle of a recruitment drive and launched a recruitment video on Wednesday.

As well as the video, police also launched the web platform ChatCops.

It features about 70 videos with a variety of staff talking about who they are, their role, what it takes to be a policeman and what training involves.

A recruitment evening will be held at the Dunedin Central police station on November 14, from 6pm to 8pm.

A separate recruitment evening aimed specifically at women is planned for December 5.
