Artificial turf at a Dunedin hockey field is being replaced and those wanting a slice of hockey history - or a new lawn - could be in luck.

The turf at the McMillan Hockey Centre will be changed next month, and the old turf given away to anyone who wants it.

Roughly 10,000sqm of turf will be lifted from the two fields. It is hoped the new surface will be ready for hockey matches in February.

Otago Hockey Association general manager Andy McLean (pictured) said there had been a lot of interest in the turf from the community.

"Which is great. We want it to be repurposed. We obviously don’t want it to go to the landfill."

Schools wanted it for playgrounds, people wanted it for dog kennels and the Dunedin City Council wanted it for cricket nets, he said.

The turf on the field closest to Harbour Tce was installed in 2012, while the far field had its turf installed in 2009; both were past their "useful life".

"[The new turf] is going to be a huge benefit in terms of quality of the surface for our local community and the ability to attract Hockey New Zealand tournaments and events."
