New facilities for Toroa College

The University of Otago has approved a plan to increase the capacity of one of its residential colleges.

During the closed section of last week's university council meeting, it approved a plan to add 20 bedrooms to Toroa College, in Regent Rd.

Property services director Barry MacKay said the project would raise the capacity of the college to 152.

At the same time as adding the bedrooms, the university would also build a dividable 190sq m common room, toilets, stairs and a rooftop terrace, Mr MacKay said.

This would address a shortfall in communal space at the college. Construction was expected to start in November and be completed by the start of the 2014 academic year.

The cost was ''commercially sensitive'', as the contract had not yet been awarded.
