Dunedin police are appealing for a mystery motorist whose car was allegedly rear-ended by a hit and run drink-driver on Thursday night.

The allegedly intoxicated motorist was pursued by a witness to his home in Caversham Valley Rd after rear-ending the four-wheel-drive at the intersection of Princes and Manse Sts about 9.30pm.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen said police were eager to catch up with the driver of the 4x4, possibly a woman, who left the scene after being allegedly rear-ended by the man's white Nissan Bluebird.

Snr Sgt Dinnissen praised the actions of the person who pursued the alleged hit-and-run drink-driver to their home and alerted police.
