Robbie Burns' work crossed generational barriers yesterday as young musicians transformed his poetry into rock music.

Four bands competed in the Robbie Rocks concert in the Octagon yesterday as about 100 people, young and old, lapped up the sunshine and the music.

The decision of the winning group was based on judge's comments and the all-important crowd reaction.

Dunedin band Distortion Boy came out on top and after an encore performance of My Luve is Like a Red Red Rose, walked away with $600 worth of Beggs MusicWorks vouchers.

Other bands to compete included Aaron Jackson and Nick Swindells, Fun Time, and The Sea Beast.
