The hammer has fallen on Musical Theatre Dunedin’s production of We Will Rock You.
The theatre company announced on its Facebook page yesterday afternoon that its May season of the Queen jukebox musical was being cancelled because of the ongoing effects of the Covid-19 Omicron outbreak.
Theatre president Dean Driver said they had chased all possible angles to postpone rather than cancel the show.
"It’s a challenging day for the cast and crew of We Will Rock You, who have faced the difficult decision to say goodbye to the iconic musical before having the chance to get it on its feet."
Fitting the production into an already disrupted theatre environment while still in the Red light setting was not possible, he said.
People who bought tickets online would receive automatic refunds in the coming weeks, while those who bought through the Regent Theatre could arrange one in person or by phone.
