Dunedin's Municipal Chambers - restored to their former glory - will be on show soon when scaffolding covering parts of the building comes down.

Sections of the building have been covered in scaffolding since November last year, when contractors began work on what was expected at the time to be a three-week survey and minor maintenance project.

Now, more than five months on, the work was finally finished and the scaffolding would come down within the next couple of weeks, council property services group manager David Bainbridge said.

No major surprises had been discovered during the work, but a mixture of loose fixtures and fittings, brickwork and roof tiles in need of repair had been found.

"I think it was as expected when you do a survey of a building like that - you don't know exactly what you're going to find, or how much of it you're going to find, but it went pretty well.

''It's over 100 years old that building. The stonework in some places is holding up really well, and in other places not so well.''

The problem areas had been fixed, including patching areas where water was leaking in and removing the building's flagpoles - temporarily - after they were found to be "not in a great condition''.

"They could have been more securely fastened, and the ironwork had started to erode a bit over time, so we thought it was better to remove them for the time being,'' he said.

The entire project was expected to cost about $130,000, but the survey results would inform a new 10-year maintenance plan being developed to keep the old building in good order, he said.
