Heavy snow warnings were lifted late yesterday morning after an earlier forecast of up to 35cm of snow in parts of inland eastern Otago.
An orange heavy rain warning was also in place in Dunedin, North Otago and Clutha until about 3pm yesterday. Contractors responding to a handful of flood-related jobs on Monday night.
MetService meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane said there was "maybe a little bit less snow’’ than expected.
However, the snow "certainly did deliver’’ in more inland areas towards Canterbury, she said.
Ms Makgabutlane said that could be put down to the wind directions, the way the winds had mixed in the atmosphere and other factors.
There was less snow than expected at lower levels but there had been reports of snow in higher areas.
Contractors responded to only a handful of callouts for flooding-related jobs on Monday night, including four reports of surface flooding in Mosgiel and East Taieri.
Contractors also pre-bagged sandbags to ensure a quick response if sandbags were needed, which did not eventuate.
In Waitaki, the rain caused road closures throughout the district.
A Waitaki District Council spokesperson said Cormacks-Kia Ora Rd between the intersections with Springhill and McNaughton Rds, 10 minutes from Oamaru, was closed because of surface flooding while a downed tree closed Tokarahi-Duntroon Rd between Livingstone-Duntroon Rd and Prydes Gully Rd.
Snow and ice closed Danseys Pass Rd and the Pigroot section of State Highway 85 was shut for a time because of the weather, the spokesperson said.
