A makeshift memorial for a Bandidos gang member has appeared at the side of Dunedin’s Northern Motorway.

Norman Williams was killed in a motorcycle crash at the site in October last year.

He was a probationary member of the Bandidos MC.

The memorial takes the form of motorcycle handlebars emblazoned with GBNF ("Gone But Not Forgotten") cemented into the ground and surrounded by rocks.

An engraved plaque in the shape of the Harley-Davidson tank badge reads RIL ("Rest in Love") Bandido Harvey 1%er, while a red bandanna is tied to the handlebars.

Bandidos MC is considered one of the world’s largest outlaw motorcycle gangs.

An NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi spokeswoman said "we normally require memorials to be in the form of a white cross located on the road boundary at a location that has been approved by Waka Kotahi".

"We acknowledge that some people like to do things their way and when this occurs, we try to accommodate this.

"Our main concern is to ensure memorials are safe and don’t pose a risk to people travelling on the road."
