Most reject closure of crossing

Most Waikouaiti residents living near a railway crossing described as the scene of an "accident waiting to happen", were not in favour of closing it, a survey has shown.

Of the 40 responses received to a Dunedin City Council mailbox drop survey, 26 people were against closing the Henry St crossing and 14 people supported the idea.

Those who wanted to see the crossing closed said there were safety issues and it was dangerous.

In 45 years, one person had seen some close calls and one fatal accident at the crossing.

Issues with boy racers and speeding were also raised.

Others, who preferred to see it left open, said there could be confusion for emergency services if it was closed.

Also, if nearby Beach St happened to be closed for some reason, such as an accident, there would be no access in to or out of the beach end of the town.

Some said they could not see a problem with the crossing, especially if it was tidied up a bit.

The Waikouaiti Coast Community Board asked council staff to provide a map at its next meeting to show where the "for" and "against" responses had come from, before it made a recommendation to the council whether the crossing should be closed or not.
