Dunedin and the wider Otago region are bucking a national trend of falling birth rates.
In the 12 months to March, 1314 births were recorded in Dunedin, up 45 (3.5%) on 1269 the previous year.
Nationally, there was a 3.6% decrease in the birth rate in the year to March.
The birth rate rose in Waitaki (7.7%) and Central Otago (5%), but fell in Clutha (-7.2%) and Queenstown (-5.1%).
Overall, there was a 1.5% increase in Otago's birth rate.
Statistics NZ analyst Anne Howard said Dunedin should not rush to build more schools just yet.
Annual figures tended to fluctuate, but overall there was little change in the birth rate of New Zealand, including Otago.
Over the last 10 years, there did appear to be a slight trend towards more births for Otago.
Nationally, births peaked about March 2009 and they had come down a little since then, but overall the birth rate was "hovering".
