More than 300 people discovered there is such a thing as a free lunch at a weekend event held in Dunedin to promote healthy and sustainable eating habits.

The offer of a free baked potato and vegetable soup lunch drew a large crowd to "Potato in the Park" at Navy Park, beside Forbury School, on Saturday.

The event was held to promote good nutrition and encourage people to incorporate more vegetables in their diets, Healthy Eating Healthy Action Otago manager Kathy Hamilton said.

"Our goals are to encourage more vegetable growing at home, to show how tasty and cheap a healthy meal can be and to encourage physical activity and the use of the green spaces in South Dunedin," she said.

Otago Farmers Market chef Alison Lambert and husband, Simon, were kept busy on Saturday serving up baked spuds and vegetable soup.

"We catered for 300 people and I think it's all going to go," Ms Hamilton said.

Families were also given a potato in a bucket and instructions from the Methodist Mission approach community learning programme on the best way to grow the staple vegetable in their home gardens.

"It's about promoting good nutrition and showing that you can eat healthy, good, cheap food at home," Ms Hamilton said.
