Bollywood-style bright lights and even brighter costumes were on show in Dunedin on Saturday night when the Indian Students Association held their annual cultural celebration.

The association organises events to celebrate India's independence day, on August 15. This year, they decided to move away from the usual patriotic performances and do something more upbeat, association president Harpreet Maggo said.

The students put on a stage show, Bollywood and Beyond, at the Dunedin Teachers College auditorium during which 63 singers and dancers performed numbers from Bollywood movies for an audience of 500 at a sold-out concert.

The show was largely attended by local Indian families and the association's 200 members.

"I hope they learnt about a different side of Indian culture and enjoyed the laid-back, fun atmosphere of the evening," Miss Maggo said.

Preparations for the show began earlier in the year when the group managed to secure sponsorship from Spice Traders and India Garden, two local Indian businesses.
