The spirit of 1981 New Zealand movie Goodbye Pork Pie - and its more recent remake - was strong among the occupants of the 60 Minis crammed into the lower Octagon, in Dunedin, yesterday.

The group roared into the city as the end of the trip from Kaitaia to Invercargill neared.

The Pork Pie Charity Run emulates the trip taken by the stars of Goodbye Pork Pie, raising money for charity along the way.

Alex Harman, of Wellington, said his love of Minis came from his father Shane, who also owned one.

Alex Harman's 1972 Mini Clubman required a quick engine change before he left for the run, after its former engine ''died''.

The trip's highlight was ''just being with all the Minis''.

''It's not every day you see 60-odd Minis in a row.''

Event spokeswoman Tracey Brake said yesterday's run started in Alexandra, and would end in Invercargill.

The event this year was raising money for KidsCan, which partners with low-decile schools to provide children with food, clothing and basic healthcare.

Ms Brake said the event was on target to raise more than $200,000.

This year's event was limited to 60 cars, and registrations filled within four hours of opening.
