Mercury drops - drive to conditions motorists advised

Frosty conditions are expected to greet motorists again this morning after police issued a warning to motorists following freezing fog on the Taieri yesterday.

Temperatures plunged to -3.9degC at Dunedin Airport and areas throughout Otago yesterday morning.

Two vehicles collided at Outram in freezing fog about 8.15am.

MetService meteorologist Andy Best said the Taieri had the worst of yesterday's chilly start.

``From about 9 o'clock [on Sunday night] they had fog and then the temperature went down to zero, so they had freezing fog all the way up until 9 o'clock this morning,'' Mr Best said yesterday.

Freezing temperatures were also reported in Central Otago with Alexandra dropping to -2.5degC, while -1.6degC was recorded at Wanaka Airport and -1.5degC in Queenstown.

``We are expecting another frost at places [this morning],'' Mr Best said.

``Mosgiel at -2degC ... and a slight frost at Queenstown and Wanaka.

``It may not get down as low as it did last night because of the cloud. But expect more fog and low cloud in Lakes District and up towards the mountain areas.''

Southern police issued a warning to motorists following yesterday morning's crash.

``Police are reminding motorists to drive to the conditions,'' a police spokesman said.

``There is ice and low fog in the Outram and Taieri areas.

``Lower your speed, increase your following distance, and take extra care.''

Only minor injuries were reported as a result of the collision in Mountfort St, Outram, he said.
