A change in business policy will see long-serving Dunedin store Farrys for Men move from its George St premises, but only if it can find a suitable alternative.
Owner Seba Farry said the store, which opened 30 years ago, "needs doing up" and "is getting too big for how we operate".
"We did not want to renew [the lease] where we were. We are looking for other locations, something smaller," he said.
Two other Farrys stores operate in Auckland and Wellington and the company preferred to run smaller stores where it could.
A suitable location had been found, but at "the 11th hour" the move fell through.
The change was not a reflection on retail in Dunedin as the "business is doing very well", Mr Farry said.
"We have to watch our costs and our biggest cost is rent."
An end-of-lease sale will start next month, with the present store expected to close "some time in July".
Its future would depend on "when and if" a new location could be found, Mr Farry said.
"The intention is not to leave Dunedin, but we may be forced into it to a certain degree."
