Rail and Maritime Transport Union national president Jim Kelly and Maritime Union of New Zealand general secretary Joe Fleet-wood, will talk about transport issues, the effect of free-trade policies and how the public can support the campaign.
Mr Kelly said Dunedin rail workers were skilled, experienced and keen to do the work.
"A large part of the work could be done in workshops like Hillside and would provide an enormous boost for Dunedin's economy," he said yesterday.
"The expertise and equipment needed to undertake this work exists in New Zealand rail workshops in Dunedin and Lower Hutt, but the Government and KiwiRail management want to take the work overseas."
The meeting is being hosted by the Alliance Party and is open to the public.
Alliance Party spokesman Victor Billot said public pressure was needed to maintain skilled jobs and industry in New Zealand at a time of high unemployment.
The meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Monday, July 12, at the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind, corner of Hillside Rd and Law St.
