Measures to stay safe after indecent assaults

Police urge people to look after their mates and stay safe this silly season after a spate of indecent assaults in Dunedin.

Alcohol harm prevention officer Sergeant Steve Jones wants people to look after each other over the Christmas and New Year period.

"We are starting to see an increase in indecent assaults on licensed premises during the past week or so ... we want people looking after themselves and mates," Sgt Jones said.

"Nip it in the bud ... call it out."

Dunedin sexual assault prevention organisation, The Red Light programme, said incidents of non-consensual touching often arise from cultural and societal norms, coupled with individual behaviour.

Red Light is an initiative designed to keep people safe and has been picked up by more than 130 venues across Otago and Southland.

People in participating bars, cinemas or other venues can approach staff and order a Red Light drink.

The code word lets staff know they need help, whether it be as simple as a drink of water or needing somebody to be removed from the premises.

"Venues should ensure staff are well-informed on handling situations, prioritise staff and artist wellbeing, set up spaces appropriately and designate chill-out areas. Conduct pre-event discussions on expectations and post-event reviews for improvement," co-founder Paige Devlin said.

She encouraged people to intervene safely, communicate boundaries and seek help when necessary.

"Your ability to respond depends on your sense of safety and confidence in the moment ... it’s empowering to learn about promoting consent and bystander intervention.

"Creating a group chat for nights out helps stay connected and openly discussing plans and expectations creates a supportive atmosphere.

"Also acknowledging the importance of preventing harm by addressing one’s own impulses and seeking support from friends," she said.

Education was important for the organisation.

"Promoting a culture of respect and consent includes educating those around you."

The message from Red Light is clear: "Self-care, mate-check, sun-soak, and embrace the heat: This summer, make waves with the hottest vibe — consent is cool!"
