In the non-stop world of sport sometimes it is is hard to find something special.

Something meaningful, something to treasure.

Something to tell the grandkids about, 30 years from now.

But for Dunedin tonight at Forsyth Barr Stadium one of those rare moments is going to occur.

Yes, the country's national team in the country's national sport is going to play at Dunedin's new $224 million stadium as the All Blacks take on their most traditional of foes, the Springboks.

It is farewell and good riddance to Carisbrook, and hello, and come on in to Forsyth Barr Stadium.

We all know the story behind the stadium - the cost, the protests, the marches, the countless accusations and name-calling, the twisted and sometimes fractured road which led to the construction of the complex.

But it is here - you could hardly miss it - and with 29,600 people packed in, it will be the place to be come 7.35 tonight.

There was that small warm-up for the venue last year, the Rugby World Cup, but finally the men in black will get to run out on to its turf tonight.

The heavens are supposed to open today. Rain, and plenty of it, is forecast for the city all day.

Weather like that would have made Carisbrook as inviting as a night-time drive up Skippers Canyon.

But for those going to the stadium tonight, the weather is irrelevant.

This beast of a stadium has a roof. The wet weather has been taken out of the equation.

It will be weather for ducks outside but fit for kings inside.

And as for what will be happening on the field - a ding-dong battle should ensue.

The past 10 matches between the sides have been split five apiece. So, going on that, it should be close.

The All Blacks have the form on the board. They have not lost for more than a year.

The Springboks lost last week - to the woeful Wallabies.

So surely an All Black win in the team's debut at the stadium is a sure thing.

Bring it on!

Today's weather
Forsyth Barr Stadium: Dry, electric atmosphere, hot air up top, bit draughty at the end.
Everywhere else in Dunedin: Wet, electrical storms, cold air here, there and everywhere, wind from South Pole.
