This is the story of the big one that did not get away.

It involves Dunedin boy, Max West, who landed a 4kg rainbow trout after just an hour of fishing.

"It's my first one."

Proud dad, Todd West, who held the rod as Max reeled it in, said he had never caught a fish so big in 16 years of trying, "so it is a pretty good effort".

Max was one of more than 140 children who yesterday took part in the first Take a Kid Fishing Day, organised by Fish and Game Otago, at the Southern Reservoir.

Participants were issued with a free one-day licence in a bid to encourage children into fishing.

To improve children's chances of catching a fish, 400 2-year-old rainbow trout were released into the reservoir last week, Fish and Game operations manager Ian Hadland said.

Organisers would consider making it an annual event.

While many children walked away with a prized fish yesterday, the reservoir was likely to remain a lure for Dunedin anglers over coming weeks, he said.

One person keen to try his luck was Chris McLeod, who watched son Jack (10) hook several fish yesterday.

Mr McLeod had tried fishing - unsuccessfully - several times at the spot during his lunch breaks as a headwater operator with the Dunedin City Council.

"Chris obviously has it and I don't," he said.
