The Otago Farmers Christmas Market had all the elements of a good New Zealand Christmas yesterday - sunshine, entertainment and plenty of food.

Market-goers made the most of the fine weather to stock up on the basics, as well as some treats for the big day.

New potatoes, cherries, stonefruit and fresh meat were high on their lists, with some unable to resist tucking into the new season fruit as they shopped.

Festive fruit mince tarts and red peonies were also on offer at the special morning market.

While numbers were not huge, shoppers appeared relaxed, with many families out and about.

Among them was Allison Dodds, who had been stocking up for Christmas dinner.

She described the fare at the market as "great".

Buskers were also out in force, with everything from rock to jazz and Christmas carols wafting through the breeze.

Stall holder Wes Reichel, of Millers Flat, said the persistent breeze was his only drama of the day, but part way through the morning he felt confident enough to erect his gazebo, as did others around him.

The market had been "steady", he said.
