Marathon run for first time in three years

After three years on the bench, Dunedin’s marathon was finally back on track at the weekend with thousands of runners pushing their bodies to the limit throughout the city.

The event began yesterday morning on a course that started at Portobello and finished outside Emerson’s Brewery.

Emerson’s Dunedin Marathon committee chairwoman Maria Sleeman said the event had been a tremendous success.

The last time the marathon was held was in 2019 and competitors were thrilled to be able to take part again.

There were 1945 entrees across all catagories, which included full the marathon, half-length, 10km and 5km walking and running events.

The half-marathon, 21.09km, was the most popular, attracting 735 entries.

A group of 195 had entered to run the full 42.19km.

So many runners meant a lot of volunteers were needed and about 200 people had given their time to make sure it ran smoothly.

The course had worked well and although there was a little bit of headwind, the morning was graced with good weather.

The combination of the long gap between events, the good weather and the smooth event created a "tremendous" atmosphere at the finish line, Ms Sleeman said.
