The driver who allegedly caused the death of a mother of five in a Waikouaiti crash has been charged with manslaughter.

Brent James Tiddy (26) appeared in the Dunedin District Court this morning where he opted not to enter a plea.

He was originally charged with reckless driving causing the death of Katherine Joyce Broad but that was withdrawn by police today and replaced by the manslaughter charge.

Ms Broad was a passenger in the single-vehicle crash in State Highway 1, at the intersection with Thomas St, on January 23.

"We lost our mother yesterday due to a tragic accident and need support as she’s left five children and an unborn grandchild behind," the victim’s daughter Tara wrote online.

"Kat was a beautiful firecracker and she will be missed very much. We are devastated and need your help."

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said at the time of the crash that speed and alcohol were believed to be factors.

A blood sample had been taken from the driver, he confirmed.

Tiddy was remanded in custody and will appear in the High Court at Dunedin later this month.
